Fairbanks

Summer's Land of Midnight Sun

No other place in Alaska blends the richness of its history with present day.  Fairbanks began as a small boomtown with the discovery of gold by Italian miner Felix Pedro in 1902. It has grown into Alaska's second largest city, and the commercial hub and gateway to the vast Interior and the Arctic. Located north of Denali National Park and south of the Arctic Circle, Fairbanks is nestled in spruce and birch forests near the Chena and Tanana Rivers.  Fairbanks is conveniently connected by air, rail and ground transportation to other locations within Alaska, Canada, the Lower 48 and Europe.

It is a land of contrasts at Latitude 64 – one where we enjoy both the midnight sun and winter fun and the activities that the seasons provide. Days in mid-summer with over 21 hours of daylight are followed months later by our winter evenings, often lit by the dancing lights of the aurora borealis. Winter activities run the gamut from ice sculpting and dog mushing to snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.  Summer offers hiking, canoeing, wildlife viewing and fishing as examples. You will find the amenities and adventure in a style that is truly authentic Alaska.

From rustic lodges and quaint B&B's to upscale hotels and campgrounds, there are accommodations to match every style. Malls, museums, many of Alaska's top-rated visitor attractions, world-renowned concerts and performances, top-notch galleries, historic sites, Alaska Native culture and access to the vast wilderness can all be found in and around Fairbanks.

The region's vibrant past and present is reflected in our diverse population and cultural traditions.  This cosmopolitan mix provides a blend of ethnic restaurants, festivals and powwows, religious services and bilingual greeters for visitors.  Fairbanks annually plays host to the World Eskimo-Indian Olympics, Festival of Native Arts, Yukon Quest International Sled Dog Race, World Ice Art Championships, Open North American Sled Dog Championships, Equinox Marathon and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival as examples. A complete events calendar is located on-line.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks is home to the statewide university administrative offices, the Geophysical Institute, the University off Alaska Museum of the North, the Large Animal Research Station and the International Arctic Research Centre.

Come discover the best of what Fairbanks has to offer.  Our small-town hospitality, cultural traditions and pioneer spirit will make your stay one to remember.
